Pattern Play

Recently I have been thinking about trying to make a few pieces of clothing for myself... It's been a looooong time since I have made any clothing items and I am afraid I will be a bit rusty. After studying Clothing Design in school I was pretty turned off by designing/making clothes, but have been wanting to try it again.

I am itching to make a loose drop waist shift or 90's baby doll style dress... Does anyone know of a good resource for patterns like this???

My inspiration:

Mociun Issaran Dress (I really wish I could just buy this dress, but it is sadly out of the current budget)

If you know of some good patterns, please let me know!

  1. Some of the Japanese dress books I am so fond of have lots of patterns for loose-fitting babydoll style dresses. I just made a dress from a book called "Stylish Dress Book 2" (available through pomadour24.etsy.com, or possibly locally for you!) and the whole time I kept thinking about how it reminded me of the Mociun tie-front dresses. The patterns tend to be pretty straightforward, and you just have to remember to add a seam allowance when you trace them!

  2. hi! i love your blog. i agree with anabela, and us portland girls are so lucky to have kinokuniya bookstore in town! Its in beaverton, inside uijimaya market. it is filled with gorgeous japanese sewing magazines with great styling.

  3. I love all the Japanese sewing patterns but I think they are a bit too much for me. I'm new to sewing and patterns tend to overwhelm me when they are in english! I've tried a Betsy Ross top as well as one by Built By Wendy that seemed to go well. Any other suggestions in english? I've been really interested in attempting some dresses.
    Thanks!

  5. Does the Stylish Dress book have bilingual instructions, or are they only in Japanese? And if it's the latter, how easy/confusing is it to navigate sans English?

    Thanks!

  6. How about searching for a vintage pattern? I imagine there are many nineties drop waist dress patterns exactly like the Mociun dress. Or, with your fashion design background, you could probably draft a pattern for a simple drop waist dress. For the dresses pictured above and below the Mociun, you could fuse a skirt pattern with a top pattern. Voila.
